Hand Hygiene...Critical to the War on Germs

With the school year beginning, it’s a good time for some important tips for battling germs. We live in a world of unknowns. No one knows how many people have touched all those door handles that we all touch every day. No one knows if those persons before us have coughed, sneezed, or just returned from the bathroom. No one knows how many of those people have a home environment that does not encourage hand washing or cough-sneezing precautions.

Let’s all begin to practice good hand hygiene at home and everywhere we go. Let’s set a good example for our children, let’s talk the talk AND walk the walk! Let’s be the standard! Put hand sanitizer in every book bag, and show our children the proper use of it. Tell Grandma and Grandpa to include hand hygiene products in Easter baskets, Halloween containers, Christmas stockings, and birthday Piñatas.

Tips for Good Hand-Washing:

  • Everyone should wash their hands before meals, after coughing or sneezing, and after using the bathroom.
  • Wash hands for at least 20 seconds (about the time it takes to sing the Alphabet song), and be sure to scrub a little more around your nails, knuckles, and any rings you might be wearing since germs especially like to collect in those areas.
  • Cough and sneeze into your upper arm/shoulder area and away from those persons close to you.
  • Try to discourage frequent touching of the face during your daily activities.
  • Please dispose of used tissues as soon as possible, and wash your hands after discarding.

Let’s all strive to provide safe surroundings for everyone. Let’s set the standards higher. Let’s be advocates for good hand hygiene at home, at school, and on the job!
